Empowering kids and youth in environmental action!
Date Published:
My website https://www.notjustatree.com/ started as a school project, which I continue working up to now. The project was meant for exhibition, as we call it, and we chose a topic that we feel passionate about and relates to the UN SDGs. I was inspired to choose deforestation and I was inspired about Julia Hill, who lived in a redwood tree for 2 years to save it. I was curious why someone would go to such great lengths to save a tree and I share her interest. I thought of creating a website at the outset to educate others, especially kids about this environmental issue.
You can refer to my interview with 4TinyHands at this link https://4tinyhands.com/the-importance-of-trees/ - as this comprehensive article contains in detail my personal written accounts as to how my project idea came about.
I wish to continue doing this project and conducting activities such as:
- Engaging with school teachers (in the Philippines, Switzerland, Australia or anywhere in the world) to continue with information campaign among students about the negative impacts of deforestation, by getting inputs from students through artworks, literature, digital or other art forms to get their engagement. Seeking contributions from students will encourage engagement for this cause, as publishing their work will promote sense of involvement and personal learning about the issue.
- Conduct book reading, inspirational talks, host and join student forums (online / face-to-face) related to environment preservation.
- Encourage youth leaders to engage in recycling and collecting second hand usable items for selling to others. Cash proceeds will be used to support furthering project activities (sustainable aim).
- Initiate or participate in community and youth-led tree planting activities including school/home/communal gardening, waste clean-up, recycling etc.
I take care of the website contents but I am duly supported by my father for website maintenance for child safety reason.
