Baking A Better Future Project
Date Published:
I am Emily from Kenya, and the Director at Kanam Women Initiative.
Kanam Women Initiative was established in 2015, the aim of establishing this group was to create a platform whereby victims of gender based violence would meet to share their experience as well as support each other.
The year 2016, the group was officially registered in Kenya as a Community Based Organization under the Ministry of Gender, and Social Development. The organization is run and managed by local women with a mission to advance women and girl’s social, economic and civic rights. To achieve this mission, the leadership of the organization has attended various capacity building forums thus acquiring adequate knowledge and skills to enable them effective design & implement projects that are in line with the organization mission.
I am writing to inquire about the possibility of partnering with us in the implementation of Baking A Better Future project, to support impoverished teenage mothers in the Kizito and Mahera Wards. Large scale unemployment of marginalized women and youth remains a major handicap in Kenya. Sustainable, self-run small businesses are needed to provide these groups employment and skills for economic security and dignity, especially since women often form the backbone of their society.
Establishing this program will offer employment, nourishment, and skills advancement. A Master Baker will train an initial group of women in the trade. A few will have full-time employment baking goods as well as train the next cohort. The others from the inaugural class will be supported to establish their own businesses in the industry creating a chain effect. Our Market surveys have shown that various institutions (universities, secondary schools, residential facilities and hostels) have great demand for these baked goods. Therefore, the products made in the bakery will be sold to various village markets, schools and vendors providing a sustainable feedback loop. Finally, raw ingredients will be sourced from local farmers securing their continual operations.
We have estimated the initial budget to implement the project to be USD 4000 and we have managed to raise USD 500 so far toward the project.
