Okalawo Children’s Village Classroom Repair

Date Published:

The Okalawo Children’s village, in Gogone, Zambezia region of Mozambique was born out of the tremendous need to
strengthen families in the community and provide education for children. The area is significantly impacted by high
mortality rates related to viruses and diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria, which cause an increase in the
trafficking of vulnerable children.
The Village is a community within the community, where we serve the families and vulnerable and/or orphaned
children through three unique facets:
- Okalawo Primary School (Grade 1 to 4).
- Community-wide programs for family strengthening, including our medical clinic for preventive health and pre-
natal training.
- Residential care, when needed.
Okalawo’s residential program allows orphan vulnerable children to be placed into new families where they receive
long term residential care in every aspect of their lives. Two out of our six residential homes are currently operational
caring for 11 children.
We educate 104 children from Grade 1 through to Grade 4. Most students live with caregivers in the larger Gogone
Community, though our eligible residential students attend the school as well for these grades. The village clinic was
in operation prior to the Cyclone and used to serve as a hub for training for all our children and their families in the
surrounding communities.
We are currently requesting funding to repair and improve the resiliency of our double classroom at Okalawo
Children’s Village. This will allow us to return our current 104 grade 1 to 4 students to a permanent structure that
was damaged during Cyclone Freddy in March this year. The entire construction process will take six months and will
cost $54,841, of which $9,800 has already been funded.
