“Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day†this is a common saying we all know.
Water is essential for us human to survive. On average people like us, we have enough source of water to drink whenever and wherever we want. We can open the fridge for ice-cold water, open the faucet for tap water or even go to store to purchase it.
On the other hand, in the mountainous areas in the Philippines is not the same. Aetas living in these areas have to walk miles to collect water from the nearest sources. They don’t care whether the water is clean or not as long as they have water to rely on. Contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea and other health risks.
The Smile Project wishes to give the indigenous community in the Philippines a water pump. The water pump will provide cleaner and safer water to drink and use.
We believe that this will bring so much joy and impact to them. This will stop them from worrying where to collect water during summer. Children won’t need to trek down mountainous landscape to take a bath, to drink water and to bring water back home for drinking and cooking. It will also prevent the risks and injuries to individuals when going down to fetch water for they are going to have water pump near them.
A water pump will also mean a lot to their sanitation. Kids can now take a bath daily, brush their teeth and wash their hands before eating. Clean hands save lives is what we teach them but having limited access to water makes it harder for them to maintain cleanliness.
We can build a water pump in the community that will benefit the whole community. This project will bring great impact to their lives from this generation up to the next one.
