Pads for Progress: Empowering Girls, One Period at a Time
Date Published:
In the heart of rural Uganda, a silent crisis unfolds each month. Thousands of adolescent girls miss school during their menstrual cycle—not because they are sick, but because they simply cannot afford sanitary pads. Lacking basic menstrual hygiene products, these girls face stigma, embarrassment, and lost opportunities.
Good Cause Foundation’s “Pads for Progress” is a community-driven project dedicated to changing this story. By providing sanitary towels, education on menstrual health, and safe spaces for dialogue, we empower girls to manage their periods with dignity—and stay in school.
The Problem
In many parts of rural Uganda:
• 1 in 10 girls misses school during their period.
• Some miss up to 4 days of school each month, falling behind or dropping out entirely.
• Girls use rags, leaves, or newspapers as substitutes—unsafe and uncomfortable solutions that compromise their health and self-esteem.
For these young girls, menstruation becomes more than a biological function—it becomes a barrier to their education, their confidence, and their future.
Our Solution
Pads for Progress provides:
• Reusable sanitary pad kits to school-aged girls (each kit lasts 12+ months)
• Menstrual hygiene education for students, parents, and teachers
• Training local women to make the pads, creating income and sustainability
• Support circles and workshops to reduce stigma and promote open conversations
Each kit we distribute is not just a product—it’s a promise that a girl’s period will never again be the reason she stays home.
We believe a pad can change a life. With your support, we can expand this project to more districts, train more women, and empower thousands more girls. Let’s keep girls in school!
Let’s turn menstruation from a barrier into a bridge—for education, dignity, and hope.
