Treehouse of Love

Soon after promising his two sons that he would build them their dream treehouse, Kees, a proud father and loving husband learnt the news that his eldest boy had committed suicide. The tragic and life changing event sparked much contemplation on how to move forward past this harrowing loss and over a conversation with his youngest son, one goal became clear; he needed to fulfil his promise of building the treehouse.
It would act as a celebration to the life of his lost son and create a space of love and play for his kid’s and down the track, their kids. The only problem was that Kees alone could not pull off such a feat.
As such, Kees shared his goal of completing his treehouse on Kindsum, the peer to peer helping platform that connects meaningful goals with kind strangers. What happened next was quite simply beautiful. Within a week, Kees was contacted by more than 10 volunteers who had read of his story and a few weeks after that they all converged in Bend, Oregon (in freezing conditions!) to help build the treehouse of love. With blood, sweat and plenty of tears, the treehouse of all treehouses was completed and presented to his youngest son coincidentally on his 14th birthday.
Kees and his family created this opportunity for Kindness through bravery, vulnerability and love. Each of the amazing volunteers who travelled to Oregon from all parts of the US showed that people are good. We just need the opportunity to explore.
