A Little Girl's Dream
Date Published:
Ever since I was little, I have always dreamed of traveling somewhere far away. I am 22 now and have never stepped foot outside of Java, Indonesia. I am currently seeking a scholarship to fund my Master's studies abroad, but there is this echoing sound in the back of my mind that says my aspiration for a scholarship is not genuine enough, for it stems from my long-lasting childhood dreams of traveling to another country. I grew up watching cartoons and shows from other countries, questioning how snow felt on human skin and why there were so few people like me on the shows (I am Southeast Asian). I would love it if I could travel to somewhere where there is winter for a couple of days, before I ever land an international scholarship, solely because I feel ashamed to use scholarship money to fulfill a little girl's dream. While writing this, I am contemplating whether to make it seem less 'selfish,' but as it is a wish, it is only truest to keep it as selfish as it is.
