SEEKING A BETTER EDUCATION

Date Published:

My name is Jemimah Omojo Attah, and I have been out of school for almost two years. This is owing to my family's financial situation, which has made paying for my education and that of my three younger siblings difficult. It has been the case for my family since I was in elementary school and throughout my high school years.
Despite my financial circumstances, I applied to universities and was accepted to study for a bachelor's degree in Computer Science at Lancaster University, a British university with a campus in Ghana.
I have a dream; to use my passion for the advancement of technology to solve global problems, while also empowering others to do the same. I believe that a university education is crucial for me to get as far as I want to. My wish is that my financial situation will no longer be a hindrance to accomplishing my goal.
My parents are unable to fund my university education because they can barely afford to pay the fees for my siblings, who are currently in high school, and I am unable to fund my education on my own. Tuition, ancillary fees, and living expenditures are all factored into an estimate of $40,000 for four years of college study.
During my time away from school, I worked as a freelancer, which allowed me to enroll in online programs and get appropriate learning materials. This was a significant step forward for me, and as a result, I was able to gain knowledge and some skills. I've had the opportunity to apply what I've learned thus far, as a graphic designer in an NGO, a volunteer tutor for kids who didn't have access to acquire computer skills, an assistant to local small businesses, and in my freelancing gigs. Now I'm eager to make a bigger impact by furthering my studies at university.
