Break the Vicious Cycle of Poverty

Raphael Munene & Team (RMT) is a community-based organisation in Kenya. We are
growth and development catalysts; youth-centred and youth-led. We help young people
mostly in informal settlements and rural areas to access training and courses, to empower
them with hands-on skills in the war against extreme poverty.
Over 1.5 million youngsters join primary school every year in Kenya. Some end their
education at this level while others proceed to high school; and a small percentage go to
vocational training centres with only primary school education. About 30% of the 1.5 million
completes high school and primary school, and transitions to colleges, universities, and
other tertiary institutions. The rest, over 70%, are unable to afford the fees and costs,
thereby falling off the education system. Majority turn to manual labour in the agriculture,
construction, hospitality, and cottage industries. A significant percentage set up kiosks, hawk
goods, or sell merchandise in open air markets; while others go to gulf nations, Europe,
Australia, and North America for housekeeping jobs and other unskilled opportunities.
Missing out on tertiary education also contributes to drug abuse, mental health issues, sex
work, and crime.
RMT seeks to provide access to free or affordable hands-on training to this population
through workshops and online courses. We target the young people in informal settlements
and rural Kenya. Our purpose is to end the vicious cycle of poverty.
