Future Entrepreneurs: Choice by Choice
Date Published: 12/21/2017
"With every experience, you alone are painting your own canvas, thought by thought, choice by choice."
~Oprah
Whew! Sometimes during the holidays, it’s hard to keep up. You may feel overwhelmed, exhausted, ineffective or frustrated. Maybe you feel like no matter how hard you work, you can never keep up. Several of you have written to me about your side hustle, or balancing family, work and your dream. (I’ve had 18 people bring up how overwhelmed they feel and it’s only Tuesday, so I can only imagine how others may also be feeling this way.)
Perhaps you are beginning to question your next step and motivation:
Am I in the right field? Will I make money as an entrepreneur?
I just can’t keep up with life online and real life. I used to feel passionate but now I dread Monday and can’t wait until Friday.
These are classic signs that you’re feeling burned out.
Take a deep breath, and we’ll help you shake it off. At the end of the year with holiday expectations, projects, gifts and events, you often feel like circumstances may be out of your control.
It’s helpful adopt an ownership mindset, that sounds like this: I have the ability to make choices that can improve my present and future. Thinking this way gives you the license to choose, even in small ways, to take action to recharge and build momentum.
Choose to believe that the right actions will lead to the right feelings, rather than the other way around. When in a burnout mindset, it’s easy to think that no matter what you do, it won’t make a difference. To fight this negativity, remind yourself that you don’t need to feel like taking action in order to do so. In fact, taking action leads to a higher desire to do activities that are more positive in the future.
Listen to your body’s physical and emotional needs. It could be as simple as getting up to stretch your legs when you’re feeling stiff, eating lunch with friends instead of at your desk, or going to bed when you’re tired. You don’t need to feel guilty if you can’t make it to every holiday event, or answer every email or card. I see more messages about not being able to keep up with social media notifications. That’s OK too. Take some time to yourself! Doing something else in the real world won’t ruin your social media plan. If it does, take a step back and look at your plan as well.
Lighten your load
Can you let go of one networking event, or take a real vacation and a social media break? I truly enjoy our positive Twitter family, comments, and tags from everyone. I also know that I will be the only one who can finish writing and editing my next manuscript and screenplay.
Need to bring gifts to a holiday gathering? Think about saving some time by having it arrive wrapped. Now you have one less thing to do (wrap) and fewer things to carry.
Key perspective: Remember that you have choices and options.
You often have a lot more choices than you believe. You need to test the perceived limits to discover what could improve in your situation. These changes will likely take time.
Shifting your mindset and taking small steps will help you begin the process of feeling less burned out and more hopeful about the future.
As Oprah said, you are creating your life: “you alone are painting your own canvas…choice by choice."
Think of one small action to take to make a positive change.
Take another deep breath, and slowly let it out. Now, let go of some expectations and commitments.
Thank you for reading and for your messages each week. We welcome your comments (but do not expect them since we just helped cross things off your list). ïŠ
Cheers + bright wishes for your holiday!
