Rise & Bake: Empowering Rural Girls Through Baking Skills in Uganda

Date Published:

Summary
In the quiet villages of rural Uganda, a generation of young women dreams not just of survival, but of opportunity. Many have been denied access to education, employment, or even a safe space to grow. This project seeks to transform their lives—one loaf at a time—by equipping them with baking skills that offer both dignity and a pathway to sustainable income.
Background and Problem Statement
In rural Uganda, girls and young women face steep challenges: early marriage, poverty, gender-based violence, and unemployment. Many drop out of school due to financial constraints or cultural barriers. With few opportunities to earn a livelihood, they are trapped in cycles of dependency and poverty.
Food insecurity is also prevalent. Yet, amidst this hardship lies a unique opportunity: baking. Baking is not only a culturally relevant skill but one that requires minimal infrastructure and can generate immediate income with the right support.
Project Goal
To empower 50 disadvantaged young women (ages 16–25) in rural Uganda by providing them with practical baking skills, business training, and mentorship, enabling them to start micro-bakeries and generate income within six months.
Objectives
1. Train 50 young women in baking, food hygiene, and basic nutrition over 12 weeks.
2. Provide entrepreneurship and business skills training, including budgeting, marketing, and record-keeping.
3. Equip each graduate with a baking starter kit (oven, utensils, flour, and ingredients).
4. Establish 5 community baking hubs where participants can work and train others.
5. Offer ongoing mentorship and support through local women-led cooperatives.
Impact
This project is about more than baking—it's about hope. Each cake sold is a declaration of self-worth. Each loaf of bread represents a girl who chose to rise instead of being broken by circumstance. For many, this will be the first time they earn their own income, make decisions independently, and feel pride in their work. Empowered girls become empowered women—and they, in turn, uplift their families and communities.
Expected Outcomes
• At least 90% of trainees will report increased self-confidence and employability.
• 40 micro-bakeries or baking partnerships will be launched within one year.
• Monthly income for participants projected to increase by at least 70%.
• Decrease in early marriage among participants due to financial independence.

Sustainability Plan
The project will train alumni to become peer-trainers, ensuring knowledge transfer. Baking hubs will operate as cooperatives, allowing for cost-sharing and continued support. We aim to link participants with local markets and schools to create demand for their baked goods.
Our Wish

Help us change lives—not with charity, but with opportunity. When you invest in these girls, you invest in an entire community's future. Let them rise—let them bake.
