School Green Gardens for Environmental Conservation in Eastern Uganda
Date Published:
Rural communities in Eastern Uganda are highly dependent on agriculture and natural resources. However, environmental degradation, poor waste management, deforestation, and climate change are putting pressure on ecosystems and food systems. Schools play a vital role in shaping future generations' attitudes and behaviors toward the environment.
Most rural primary schools lack structured programs to teach conservation or practical agriculture. Establishing school green gardens will serve both as a learning tool and a source of environmental action, fostering a culture of conservation among children and the wider community.
Objectives
To promote environmental awareness and conservation practices among rural primary school children.
To establish and maintain sustainable green gardens in five rural primary schools.
To improve knowledge and skills in climate-smart agriculture and tree planting.
To involve communities in supporting environmentally-friendly school initiatives.
