Future Entrepreneurs: Pulse Check
Date Published: 9/28/2017
As the infamous Harry Caray would say, Holy cow! The defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs are in first place, and knocked the St. Louis Cardinals out of the pennant race with authority on Monday night, beating St. Louis 10-2 behind a quality start from Jon Lester, and solid games from Javy Baez and Addison Russell. This win lowered the Cubs Magic Number to win the NL Central to ONE!
It’s already been six months with my chapter of “Future Entrepreneurs†on The Wishwall. We are taking care of business and getting ready for Pearl Jam’s “Let’s Play Two†film premiere in Chicago this week.
I’ll share news and pretty views from the film premiere on social media. Thank you for a quick sell out on 2 sets of #ShineThroughtheNoise jewelry! Special thanks again to my friends Simonetta of The Wishwall Foundation and Jane from Rock Your Messages who helped the giveaway go so well!
Here is the collection of “champion choices†by request. I realize some of you may be new to “Future Entrepreneursâ€, and it is very important to take pulse checks to stay on course in our entrepreneur journey towards success.
This week sports and political stances were in the news as many #takeaknee. We respect your political and team views. Whether you are a Chicago Cubs fan or not, we can all benefit from the team vision that helped shape the championship team make history.
Champion Choices for Future Entrepreneurs
“Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.†~ Alan Armstrong
I was grateful to attend the Choose Chicago partner event at the annual meeting where Tom Ricketts, the Chicago Cubs chairman and owner, spoke about how the team started from zero as they build their heroes. They spent thousands of hours scouting to build their team. Mr. Ricketts showed us the building block on the path to becoming champions. I will use some of the secrets the champions shared as we start this fun and productive journey with
“Future Entrepreneursâ€.

Champion Choices: Adaptability
A key to being a successful entrepreneur is being ready to adapt as business evolves in the 21st-century. Technology changes quickly from smart phones to tablets, to the latest apps to communicate and share our latest ideas. Entrepreneurs can stand out by being open to these changes and curious about how they will work well for their personal and professional brand.

Champion Choices: Growth Mindset
“I heard about a high school in Chicago where students had to pass a certain number of courses to graduate, and if they didn’t pass, they got the grade ‘Not Yet’. I thought that was fantastic, because if you get a failing grade, you think, ‘I’m nothing, I’m nowhere’. But if you get the grade ‘Not Yet’, you understand that you’re on a learning curve. It gives you a path into the future. ~Dr. Carol Dweck, growth mindset expert.
Put adaptability and "not yet" into practice:

Champion Choices: Mindfulness
“Mindfulness is a quality that’s always there. It’s an illusion that there’s a meditation and post-meditation period, which I always find amusing, because you’re either mindful or you’re not. The meditation is just taking different forms.†~Richard Gere
Therefore, mindfulness is available to us in many ways. It’s a calming factor whether in formal meditation, in the form of a walk, or in guiding yourself back to perceiving instead of just reacting.
Take a deep breath. Now learn how to make mindfulness work for you:

Concentrate your thoughts on the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus. ~Alexander Graham Bell
We’ve talked about how adaptability comes into play, and what trendy terms like “mindfulness†can mean to you. Last week we all took a lesson in ways to cope when things don’t go according to plan. Now, let’s get our head back in the game. Yes, entrepreneurs are playing in a competitive field.
One of the top clichés in sport is 90% of performance is mental. The issue is that 90% of coaches and athletes spend 100% of their time working on the physical and fundamental aspects related to their sport. Many neglect the key factor that ultimately separates successful athletes from those who do not reach their full potential.
What if sport…or performance…is 100 percent mental?
Read on, then put these ideas into practice before your next presentation, pitch or interview.

Getting our head in the game
Yes, I’m a true blue Cubs and Pearl Jam fan. As a reward for working on your goals this week, take a few hours to be inspired with fun music in Pearl Jam’s concert film, “Let’s Play Twoâ€.
“The first time you step in Wrigley, it’s like stepping into Oz!†~ Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam's lead singer
“Let’s Play Two†is a documentary film that chronicles Pearl Jam’s legendary performances at Wrigley Field during the Chicago Cubs historic 2016 season. Chicago is Eddie Vedder’s hometown, and Pearl Jam has forged a relationship with the city, the Chicago Cubs and
Wrigley Field that is unparalleled in the world of sports and music.
From Ten to Lightning Bolt, the documentary film shuffles through Pearl Jam’s ever-growing catalog of originals and covers - spanning the band's 25-year career. Through the eyes of renowned director/photographer Danny Clinch and the voice of Pearl Jam, the film showcases the journey of this special relationship.
