TREE PLANTING PROJECT ON THE STEP SLOPES OF MOUNT RWENZORI AND BAMBOO PLANTING ON BANKS OF RIVER NYAMWAMBA AND NYAMUGASANI

The proposed wish is for Tree planting/tree cover restoration on the steep slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains and bamboo planting on the banks of Rivers Nyamwamba and Nyamugasani with concentration in Nyabirongo Parish and Kajwenge Parish in Kisinga Subcounty, Kalonge parish in Kyarumba Sub-county and the schools in the three sub-counties of Kyarumba, Kisinga and Lake-Katwe and Kasese Municipality in Kasese District in Western Uganda for enhancing and promoting environment conservation as a sure means of improving the conditions of living of the community in the project area and stopping big losses when these rivers burst their banks.
The high dependence on agriculture for people’s livelihoods in the country and the proposed project areas inclusive has led to wide spread clearing of land for agricultural activities. This has resulted in shortage of wood fuel resources depended upon by over 98% of the population and constant soil erosion and soil fertility decline. This has resulted into prolonged droughts, causing hunger, river Nyamwamba and Nyamugasani out burst their banks landslides on the slopes of the mountains, malnutrition, mass poverty, persistent natural resource degradation and consequently rampant out break of diseases, wood fuel shortages and constant soil erosion and declining soil fertility. This is cute problem in our community that requires immediate attention and action. The most affected people are the women in their respective households.
The Project will involve planting trees in 90 acres of land on the steep bare hills to prevent soil erosion and maintain biodiversity. The project proposal is designed to plant trees on the bare hills in Kajwenge and Nyabirongo Parishes, Kalonge parish and 30 acres’ schools in the three sub-counties with the objective of restoring, conserving, managing and sustainably using the available resources for sustainable development. This will be achieved through controlling soil erosion, sensitizing community, farmer groups and community leaders in their roles and responsibilities in conserving the environment.
