"This changes everything for my students…â€~ Melissa Salguero
NYC music teacher and mentor gets touching surprise
This Teacher Appreciation Week, Jenna Bush Hager introduces us to Melissa Salguero, a top 10 finalist for the Global Teacher Prize for her efforts building the amazing music program at P.S. 48 in the Bronx. Melissa comes to Studio 1A for a special surprise from her students.
Melissa Salguero has been teaching music at P.S.48 Joseph R. Drake Elementary School since 2010. P.S.48 is also located in the poorest congressional district in the United States. Ms. Salguero's classroom is a place where creativity, curiosity, humor, and hard work combine to feed a passion for learning.
When Ms. Salguero started teaching there were no instruments and no funding for the music program at P.S.48. Over the years, she has been awarded many grants and teaching awards that have helped to ensure that none of her students are excluded from participating in the music program due to financial hardships. In 2014, Ms. Salguero and the school were featured on “Ellen†after the school was broken into.
The Global Teacher Prize recognizes just one teacher a year who is making outstanding contributions in education (and awards $1 million as the prize).
"We're talking the world--all teachers! This is such an incredible honor. When I found out, I was flabbergasted; the caliber of all the other educators who are finalists just blows me away," Salguero said. "This changes everything for my students. Now the world will know about my tiny little school in the South Bronx!"
In February, she was named 2018 Grammy Music Educator of the Year.
