Tree Planting for Climate Change Mitigation

Bunyangabu, a region in western Uganda, is grappling with increased flood, landslide, and heat risks due to climate change and deforestation. Despite around 50% tree cover throughout the district, rapid population growth, unregulated timber harvesting and a reliance on wood for fuel have put the ecosystem under pressure, leading to rapid forest loss.
Alongside this, extreme rainfall events, exacerbated by climate change, have caused devastating floods, soil erosion, mad slides and land degradation leaving properties and infrastructure severely damaged.
Our wish as Kyamukube Youth and women Initiative has devised a comprehensive plan for reforestation and tree planting in trading centers, along roads, schools, across river Nsyonjya and highlands of Mabenga and Butini in Katebwa Sub- County. The primary objective of this initiative is to mitigate flood risks by implementing agroforestry and reforestation measures in critical areas throughout Bunyangabu, including riverbanks, urban spaces, and nearby hills.
The project will increase income generating opportunities for the members and the surrounding community and promote environment friendly technologies and to empower both men and women on how to make agriculture and forestry a business. The project will also address issues of like replacing trees (re-afforestation) in deforested areas, planting trees on bare hills and planting shade trees in schools and churches which will act as windbreakers and shade for school children and congregation.
