Date Published: 4/26/2019
THE PROPOSED SIMONETTA LEIN ANNUAL LITERACY COMPETITION.
Executive Summary:
The Nigerian population is estimated at 198 million in 2017 and 60% of this population is less than 45 years old. The majority of this people are Children and Youths who are largely unemployed and some are out of schools.
The United Nations’ projection is that by 2030, Africa, including Nigeria will be home to the youngest population in the world and 50% of Nigeria’s 300 million populations will be below 20 years old.
Unfortunately, according to the Federal Ministry of Education, 10.3 million out of 20 million of the world’s out-of-school children are in Nigeria and have no access to Quality Education. Hence, the future remains very uncertain for these young and rising stars.
Focus:
The Simonetta Lein Annual Literacy Competition will be hosted on May 27th, a day set aside by the United Nations Children's Education Fund (UNICEF) to celebrate Children globally.
The competition will feature Students from various schools with 60% participation of Girls and 40% for the boys. This is because of the continuous engagement of the Girl-Child as laborers on farmlands when their peers are in schools. Also, some of the girls are married off at a very tender age. We want to change this narrative by launching this Literacy Competition.
Strategy:
Contestants will be selected by an independent Team of iRead To Live Initiative through a preliminary Spelling Bee Competition.
Each School will present Two (2) representatives for the competition.
Methodology:
The contestants will be tested on Mathematics, Use of English, Science and General Studies.
For the Preliminary stage, three (3) questions will be answered by individual student(s) to qualify for the next round.
Championship:
The Championship will feature outstanding representatives to compete in the final stage for various Educational prizes.
The suggested prizes are as follows:
First Position: A mini Laptop, Dictionary, Three Text books for core subject, Mathematical sets and Writing Materials
Second Position: A mini Laptop, Three Text books for core subjects, and Writing Materials.
