Repurposing smart technologies to empower rural women in Papua New Guinea.
Date Published: 5/27/2024
The low-income status of many rural communities in Papua New Guinea has been a persistent problem and a major obstacle to transformation, inclusion, and growth. The result of this has been detrimental especially on women and girls who are often subject to forms of discrimination.
My wish is to help reduce the magnitude of this problem. The approach I will use is repurposing already-available and emerging tech solutions to create modern-day spaces in the communities where women and girls can engage socially and economically.
These proposed spaces will be established by capitalizing on the benefits of current technological developments that are unveiling robust and innovative tech products that are easy to install, operate, and maintain in susceptible settings. These products will include the plug-and-play Bluetti Solar Generator (https://www.bluettipower.com/products/ac300-b300?variant=44656107290843) to cater for small-scale energy need of the assortments, Koolboks Chest Freezers (https://www.koolboks.com/) to preserve perishable goods like fish and prawns to sell in urban markets and Kacific’s Internet of Things (https://kacific.com/png/services/kacific-internet-of-things/) to enable digital connectivity. All these products can be procured locally.
The approach is to repurpose and integrate the functions of these smart products so that their collective technological marvels can foster greater impact for causes that are eloquent. As an example, the innovative Bluetti Solar Generators, which contains inbuilt lithium-ion phosphate batteries and can last over a decade are coagulated as back-up power for homes in industrialized countries as well as for leisure outings. In this project, I will demonstrate the idea of repurposing these for more eloquent causes i.e., as conducive energy units to create modern-day thresholds to support the social and economic aspirations of the marginalized. In facilitating this, I hope to help reduce the magnitude of struggle in rural settings.
This initiative will kickstart in Kania Village, a last-line and unconnected community richly endowed with local resources. The goal is to rouse women and girls from this community (picture) as well as from two neighboring villages to tap into the local resource depositories and engage in small-scale commercial activities.
While this looks like an impressive concept, my desire to facilitate the provision of these modern-day liberties can only come true if the initiative is supported and my wish granted. Please help me empower rural women to elate their families through this initiative.
