Hope for the ghetto
Date Published:
My wish is to form an organization that focuses on the vulnerable youths in Grenada with international support. A program that focuses on community-led youth development work. The objective is to foster a spirit of change among youths by bridging the generation gap. As a child,i remember the proverb it takes a 'village to raise a a child resounding in Grenada; at present these old sayings are no longer a part of our Grenadian culture.
I see a breakdown in the family structure and a society plagued by crime and violence. Absentee fathers and mothers are working three jobs to make ends meet. Children are left to raise children and are robbed of their innocence as bills have to be paid and food has to be bought. The cries from the ghetto are cries for help, with little or no support from those who should care.
I know this is only a wish... but I wish to see the ghetto youths be given equal access to educational opportunities; I wish they wouldn't be discriminated against because of the communities they come from; I wish that they would get psychological support for the trauma they silently battle with from qualified persons, I wish that safe houses can be constructed in each parish for youths who want to take a positive path, and I wish avenues or networks can be established for youths in the ghetto who are 'creatives' to pursue their dreams ...aspire too. Whether it's dance, music, drama, art, and more, I do believe and still believe there is 'hope for the ghetto but it starts with me and you being our brother's keeper !!!
