Future Entrepreneurs: Summer Flavor
Date Published: 6/28/2018
When you’re an entrepreneur, you’re not a business person, and you surround ourselves with people who are.~ Jeni Britton Bauer
Last week we talked about adapting our business acumen to work smart and still enjoy summer.

This week, we’ll involve entrepreneurial inspiration Jeni Britton Bauer, founder of Jeni’s Ice Creams jenis.com. I sampled 5 gourmet flavors with friend in Chicago and at Ravinia Festival to help support (RED) during the #86AIDS campaign in June (https://www.red.org). This is my fourth year supporting that campaign, so thanks to all my friends who have helped…and an extra helping of gratitude for their patience as I transported ice cream pints/dry ice around Chicago this week in warm summer temps. :) It was totally worth it! Grab your favorite flavor and listen in:
Ice cream was not Jeni’s first love or passion. It was a way to bring together her passion for pastry and art, and a penchant for blending perfumes. Jeni was studying fine art at Ohio State University and working at a bakery when she decided to start making ice cream. She opened Scream Ice Cream in Columbus, Ohio, in 1996, then opened the first Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams in 2002. Jeni's opened ice cream shops in six states and written two cookbooks, including "Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home," which earned a 2012 James Beard Award.
Who’s your mentor?
I haven’t had many when it comes to ice cream making and discovery, but I’ve had people who have pushed me to explore my vision and go towards a goal everyone told me that I couldn’t.
In business, it’s my CEO John Lowe, who has helped me bring up this two-headed monster. When you’re an entrepreneur, you’re not a business person, and you surround ourselves with people who are. The other day he brought me this book about finance for entrepreneurs, and it’s this help with continuing to learn.
That’s the easy part… It’s everywhere. If I’m lacking in it, I’ll go to the library. You’re surrounded by inspiration. I can pick a book off the shelf, pick a sentence, and challenge myself to find an ice cream flavor. I’ll choose anything; art, history. What did it look like? What did it smell like? I use my imagination for that even more than real life. I’ve never been to Bangkok, but I could imagine an ice cream flavor.
What’s the best advice someone’s ever given you?
When I was really young, I was reading a lot. A person I worked with at the bakery turned me onto self-help books, and one thing really stuck with me. It said, you never say “why, me?†Always assess and move forward. I haven’t read one since then, but one thing of recalibrating your compass to go forward, to just look unemotionally and see and go to the next step stuck.
