Safe Drinking water for Nguzira Area in Nkhotakota District - Malawi

Date Published:

Nguzira Area, located in Traditional Authority Mphonde within the Nkhotakota district of Malawi, is one of many places facing the urgent issue of unsafe drinking water. In the absence of a reliable water source, the community resorts to excavating sand wells for their water supply. However, these wells pose significant health and safety risks, as animals such as dogs, goats, cows, chickens, and pigs often drink from the same source, increasing the likelihood of water contamination.
Tragically, these wells have been death traps for girls and women who collect water, as their soft and fragile edges can lead to falls causing injuries, permanent disabilities, or even fatalities. Furthermore, consuming untreated water from these wells frequently results in diarrhea and other waterborne illnesses. During the rainy season, the situation worsens, as the wells become filled with waste and debris washed in by rainwater, exacerbating the health risks for the community.
My wish is to drill a borehole in the Nguzira Area to provide safe drinking water for the community and eliminate the need to share water sources with animals. This intervention would drastically improve the health and well-being of the local people, ensuring a reliable and sanitary water supply for generations to come.
