Let's Break the World Record

Have you heard about a saying that if you want to hide anything from an African, put it in a book? On 12th July 2024, Kenyan children will demonstrate to the whole world that this is a mere myth by attempting to break the World Record for Most People Reading Aloud from the Same Text at the Same Time in Different Venues currently held by the USA with 223,363 participants in 909 venues. We will rally 300,000 learners from 3000 schools in Kenya to participate in The National Read Aloud at the inaugural annual National Reading Day, declared by the President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr. William Ruto.
The National Read Aloud's focus goes beyond record-breaking to the transformative power of reading to amplify the voices of African children in the fight against climate change. The captivating stories will spark awareness and empower a generation of young climate ambassadors, aligning with SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, and 17.
The Earth's cries for help demand immediate action. Climate change is a stark reality, and the time for inaction is over. Who better to lead the charge than the guardians of our future – the children of Africa? UNICEF reports that children and young people bear the brunt of the impact of climate change. They face increased deaths from natural disasters, a rise in non-communicable diseases, and the destruction of their homes and infrastructure. The UN Human Rights Council and the Committee on the Convention on the Rights of the Child have both declared that inaction on climate change violates children's fundamental right to a safe and sustainable planet.
Though not responsible for its creation, children will inherit the consequences of climate change. This is why, as an organisation advocating for children's voices, we aim to leverage the power of reading to cultivate climate awareness and inspire action in children.
The National Read Aloud's overall goal is to amplify the powerful voices of African children in fostering climate change awareness by leveraging the transformative power of reading, by positioning storybooks/stories as powerful tools that can be used to teach and introduce children to complex concepts and conversations, like climate change.
To enable us to achieve this dream, I wish to have these 300,000 learners participate in this groundbreaking event. One learner's participation costs $2(two dollars). This enables each learner to get an excerpt of which to read on the day and collect evidence from all the schools.
Please support my wish: one learner = $2 dollars.
