Diversity Wins at the Oscars

Date Published: 3/01/2017

A year after #oscarssowhite, the amazing Moonlight took home the award for Best Picture. In a big year for diversity in movies, Moonlight touched on both Black and LGBTQ issues. Even though we had a huge increase in Black performances on and off the screen, we still have a long way to go. We still have a plethora of White actors playing Asian roles. Women are still paid significantly less than their male counterparts. These are just some of issues we have to change in order to become a more fair and just society.

My wish is that we become more cautious of the movies we watch. I hope that more of us will look out for racial stereotypes, or even do a little research before they go see a movie. Just being aware of the effects movies and TV have on us is an amazing step in the right direction.

Much love to the men and women of Moonlight. I'm hoping with the win we will see the light of diversity in Hollywood and beyond.

Peace and love,

Andrew
