My name is Zachery Onyango, Founder and CEO at Development Alert-https://da.or.ug, a fully registered organization operating in areas of Tororo District in Eastern Uganda. I’m a social worker, an environmentalist and a volunteer.
My wish is to build and furnish a computer laboratory to support the learning of over 400 students studying at Paya Secondary School in the rural areas of Paya Sub County. Paya Secondary School like many other rural schools in Uganda, provide a learning opportunity children from extremely poor households that can’t afford to take their children better schools with all the necessary resources. For almost 23 years, Paya Secondary school has operated without a Computer Laboratory, Library, teachers’ quarters and enough classrooms and these have negatively affected the learning of so many children from poor households. As the only Secondary School in Paya Sub County, having the necessary infrastructure including a well-furnished computer laboratory is really critical for the school to provide a conducive learning environment and boost the learning of the students because for so many years now, students have only been fed on theory and this has affected skills development and as such making not compete favorably in the job and therefore not contributing to their literacy improvement.
Paya Secondary School is a government aided Day-Program school located in Paya sub-county in Tororo district was started by the community of Paya sub-county in 1986. It operated up to 1990 but due to insurgency of Alice Lakwena (a rebel group), the school was destroyed and collapsed. In an effort to revive the school, it was taken over by the government in January 2001.
Located in the rural and isolated area of Tororo District, Paya Secondary School is the only secondary school in the region with a large catchment area of seventeen (17) Universal Primary Education schools. This makes the school a very important institution in the region and therefore, securing more infrastructure and a critical one like a well-established and furnished computer laboratory would be such a wonderful addition to this special learning institution.
With a total enrollment of over of 400 students (as of 26th July, 2023), this is a huge number of learners to be realized to the community without computer knowledge and certification. And considering that the school main support learners from rural and extremely poor households, it serves as the only opportunity for the community to access education. In addition, computers studies are part of the Ugandan Education syllabus and as such, it is examined by the Uganda National Examinations Board an indication that the poor students are examined on things they are not practically involved and have nothing to show in form of highly demanded computer skills when they leave the school.
Our wish is to;
1. Construct a Computer Laboratory Block- $57000
2. Install 30 Brand New Computers-$25000
