Future Entrepreneurs: Empower Girls & Women

In 2011, as the result of youth advocacy around the world, the United Nations declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. Its mission is “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.†It’s a day when activist groups come together under the same goal to highlight, discuss, and take action to advance rights and opportunities for girls everywhere.
Day of the Girl-US is the United States branch of this global movement. We are a 100% youth-led movement fighting for gender justice and youth rights. Our work to dismantle the patriarchy and fight for social justice is rooted in girl-led activism across the country, using October 11th as a day of national action.
October 11 is not just a day; it’s a movement.
A worldwide revolution.
We want ourselves, and girls everywhere, to be seen as equals, in the eyes of others and in our own eyes. I support this by bringing this movement and wish to The Wishwall, on this Day of the Girl and beyond.
I have volunteered with the ONE Campaign for 5 years, and speak about the important education played in my upbringing in my first book, Secrets to Shine through the Noise (dedicated to my mother who made education a priority).
I love men. My support of women does not diminish this. I went to an all-girl high school in St. Paul, MN that gave me insight into women supporting young women. My experiences with those teachers and friends have made me a better writer and dreamer. It taught me to have vision of my future and goals at fifteen. I have lofty goals in novel and films with my thriller series, so I am still fulfilling them. ïŠ
She persisted…
As we are on the subject of empowerment, more women are coming forward about their experiences on decades of inappropriate conduct from Harvey Weinstein, from aggressive overtures to sexual assault. Believe them. I work in independent film and I lived in LA, and I have been through uncomfortable “casting couch†scenarios as an actor. Mentioning these scenarios used to evoke an eye roll…some type of acceptance that this was part of the culture. I am grateful that women are coming forward with their stories, and that we are now in a community that will listen. We support you and believe you.
