Africa Disability Youth Network (ADYONET) wish to construct a five stance improved pit latrine at Uganda Martyrs Nyakasanga Primary School for improved sanitation and health among the ongoing school children and teachers including people with disabilities. The need for this wish emanated from a survey conducted by Africa Disability Youth Network (ADYONET) to assess the sanitation and hygiene needs in schools and slum communities which revealed serious sanitation and hygiene needs to address the looming sanitation.
Uganda Martyrs Nyakasanga Primary School has a population of over 715 children and 20 teaching and non-teaching staff. The school has dilapidated latrine with old poor structure, leaking roof, blighted walls, worn out weak latrine holes that can collapse with a little pressure. School enrolment is on high increase and the practice of open defecation and urination is on high rate. The environment is unsafe where children and teachers have abandoned using the latrine due to its dilapidated nature. The latrine has no doors and ramps for proper accessibility by children, teachers, Non-teaching staff including people with disabilities (PWDs). There is bad smell due to open space defecation and urination causing related illnesses like diarrhea, dysentery and cholera. This has increased absentism of children, teachers and school management resulting into school dropouts and poor performance due to lack of place of convenience putting their life at risk. There is urgent need to make sanitation and hygiene accessible as well as providing sanitation education to save beneficiaries from related illnesses.
