Bright Ideas + Balance

Date Published: 1/04/2018

Balance is not something you find. It is something you create. (Popular wisdom quote.)

This year I wish you bright ideas and balance! ~Akasha Garnier

This came up during my top influencer conference in LA, as well as in Social Media Week trends in New York and Chicago. I’ll share a couple key points to consider; I’ll then go into detail and strategy in my #ShineThroughtheNoise sequel, (2018 by reader and publisher request – thank you)!

Brand Purpose 2.0

You have probably heard of this insight by now, but it is worth a healthy look as you kick off the new year: consumers are factoring things like brand mission, values, and sustainability into their purchase decisions. Shoppers are “voting with their wallets,” so smart brands will continue to step up in 2018, taking a stand in ways that go beyond a one-off viral video or :30 spot.

Specialized agencies [https://www.conspiracyoflove.mobi] are popping up to help brands identify and communicate their purpose. Brands that work with community partners and non-profits continue to show they care about profits, as well as purpose.

Analog Bounceback

The tides of technology rage on, and 2017 saw several examples of people and businesses gravitating around purposefully non-digital aims. These included companies that, despite being rooted in technology, aspire to help people unplug and unwind (#meta). Calm, a meditation app, was named Apple’s App of the Year. Meanwhile, companies like Getaway (https://getaway.house/) gained popularity by connecting people with nature.

Brands are getting on board, as well. When I attended a Casper influencer event, they also shared success stories from the back to nature outing Casper hosted for its community during the solar eclipse (http://www.eclipsewithcasper.com). For a third straight year, REI extended its #OptOutside campaign urging people to enjoy nature instead of shopping on Black Friday.

1) Think about your brand “why” again. How does your brand mission support this why?

How do your values come into play here?

Are there changes from last year to include?

2) What could you plan for 2018 that will be part of a campaign where participants will want to post photos? In addition, what could you plan to help people balance and unplug?
