ENGAGE CHILDRENS HOMES IN NANYUKI, KENYA WITH LIFE SKILLS LESSONS AND ART/CRAFT FOR WHOLISTIC GROWTH
Date Published:
Last year I worked with an NGO called ADMISS - Italy to provide life skills lessons (20 Sundays in the month of September to December 2024) e.g. self awareness, talent identification, goal setting, coping skills, problem solving and sexuality . In art I engaged young people to teach them about animals then made animals via paper art. In craft, I engaged young mothers who had done tailoring to teach them how to make bow ties, scrunchies, pencil pouches and bucket hats. Learning life skills, helped them be able to find out their worth and purpose since they were unmotivated and undisciplined. Paper art helped them learn about animals and characters that they could emulate from them. Craft skills helped them unleash their creativity, have items that enhance beauty or can help in organization and reduce stress levels. Team building activities helped them learn how to collaborate, share and solve problems. All this activities helped provide discipline and structure which lacks in children's home of Furaha foundation (59 children aged 5 years to 18 years). In YOU- REP children's home (17 children,6 years to 17 years), the young mothers who are tailors made clothes as gifts for Christmas to all children and participated in team building activities. The project ended in December and could not be renewed. What the children learnt is a drop in the ocean and they need continuous activities since they learn via repetition for wholistic development. My wish is to find a donor who can support this activities to continue in both children's home that lack money to pay workers who can provide structure and creativity to this children who are orphans/ vulnerable and live in poverty. At the same time young people and the young mothers will find opportunities to mentor children as they have an allowance to cater for their needs. The idea can become sustainable if the donor can provide materials to create products from the young mothers tailors, to help market worldwide, in order to have funds to support them, children's home in Nanyuki, Kenya and mentor other young mothers too!
