Stop Discrimination Against Transgender, Non-Binary, and Gender-Nonconforming Youth

Our civil society has at least gratefully taken lots of steps to become more diverse, equitable, and inclusive to LGBTQ+ youth. But, there are still lots of civil rights steps which must be taken in order to expand the LGBTQ+ youth community’s body.

While schools, healthcare systems, and other organizations are improving in their ability to accommodate transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming youth in everyday support systems and safe spaces, there are problems which still occur. For example, some schools, healthcare systems, organizations, and its policies may still require parental consent in order for underage youth to use their preferred name, gender, and pronouns in official records and addressing. It can be considered unfair for underage transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming youth to need formal parental consent in order to express their identity in some schools along with certain policies, participate in, assist, or host gender-affirming curriculums.

When it comes to gender in official forms, surveys, or applications, asking for genders can at times be unfair, since many forms, surveys, or applications tend to rely on binary genders. This is why some LGBTQ+ people may either prefer to identify themselves with pronouns or that a form would allow them to list their gender in a short answer question—rather than a multiple response question.

It goes against LGBTQ+ civil rights when transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming youth are not allowed to and face a penalty for using restrooms, playing in sports, or attending certain spaces which matches with the gender they personally identify with. It is like saying that transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming youth do not exist and that only biological male and female youth exist—which is very destructive and stigmatizing towards the LGBTQ+ community.

When it comes to celebrating Parent’s Day, Non-binary Parent’s Day which is annually on the third Sunday of April is overlooked from calendars, mainstream media, and spiritual teachings plus worship. Transgender mothers tend to be dismissed throughout Mother’s Day and that transgender fathers are also dismissed throughout Father’s Day. This especially can be a step of leading transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming youth to having less access to people relating to them, although there are still lots of age group peers, educators, mental health professionals, and mentors who can relate to them.

What also concerns transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming youth is when new people or those unaware of other gender identities plus expressions, interrogate whether a youth is a male or female. This not only stigmatizes transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming youth, but is considered urging to overlook the actual identity of these youth.

The wish of many transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming youth is that they would be naturally empowered, such as being honored with all of their identity preferences in schools, healthcare systems, and organizations without the stigmatizing need for parental consent and empower their own identity, be part of, manage, and host gender-affirming curriculums without the stigmatizing need for parental consent. Expanding more on gender equality, there must be more gender inclusive and accessible forms, surveys, and applications—including the right and protection when it comes to restrooms, sports, and access to spaces for transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming youth.

While age group peers, educators, mental health professionals, and mentors are helpful for transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming youth, it is also important that Non-Binary Parent’s Day would be mentioned on calendars and mainstream media every April, transgender mothers are honored every Mother’s Day, and that transgender fathers are honored every Father’s Day. This can increase the chances of these youth receiving compassion.

The honoring of transgender, non-binary, and other gender-nonconforming people, especially youth, is a civil right, not something to be negotiated nor compromised with opponents, whether in school, healthcare systems, other organizations, or even residentially.
