FE: Healthy hustle
Date Published: 8/26/2021
We’re here to help keep you stay balanced on your path as an entrepreneur. As we head into late summer, fall and updated mask mandates, you may be dehydrated. My wish is to help you recognize it.
Although hydration recommendations vary according to your height, weight, and age, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine suggest you strive for the equivalent of 125 ounces of water (around 15.6 8-ounce cups) per day. Are you?
And while proper hydration may not be high on your work/hustle to-do list, it ought to be — dehydration can cause a range of unexpected, productivity-sapping symptoms. Your body needs water to move oxygen to your organs and to synthesize the hormones and neurotransmitters.
Of course, everybody knows that thirst is a sign you need water, but most people are surprised to learn that once you reach the point where you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.
Read on for 6 nutritionist signs and tips.
1. Fatigue
“You feel tired, sluggish, dizzy, or lightheaded, so you probably need to eat something or maybe lie down, right?†said Sarah Mirkin, author of “Fill Your Plate, Lose the Weight†and “The Beginner’s Guide to Low-FODMAP.†“Wrong. This is actually a common sign of dehydration.†Is fatigue making it hard to concentrate? “Even if you’re just moderately dehydrated, it can negatively affect your cognitive performance,†said Jackie Newgent, author of “The Clean & Simple Diabetes Cookbook.â€
Believe it or not, your brain is 73% water, and dehydration can impair your attention span and short-term memory.
2. Hunger
“People often think they are hungry when they actually are dehydrated,†Mirkin said. “This often includes sugar cravings, which can cause overconsumption of calories and weight gain.â€
3. Constipation
If you’re having GI trouble, it may be because your digestive system is literally running dry: Water helps you properly digest food and eliminate waste.
4. Dark urine
Speaking of eliminating waste, dark urine is more than just the most awesome name for a sci-fi villain ever: When you’re properly hydrated, your pee should run nearly clear.
5. Bad breath
“When you’re not drinking enough water, you don’t produce as much saliva, which can lead to the growth of unhealthy bacteria in your mouth,†Newgent said.
6. Dry eyes and skin
“Like the rest of your body, your eye tissues need water to function properly,†Newgent said. “If your eyes or contact lenses seem unusually dry — like when you feel the need for eye drops — that may be a sign of dehydration.â€
The same goes for your skin, which is 64% water and will lose elasticity without proper hydration.
How to hydrate— even when wearing a mask
You’re busy. You’re overbooked. And you may be wearing a mask for much of your workday. How can you protect yourself from fatigue, lack of concentration, and other dehydration symptoms that could interfere with your entrepreneur journey and career?
“Start the workday off right by drinking a large beverage of choice just before putting on a mask each morning,†Newgent said. “Keep doing this until it becomes a habit.â€
“Carry a refillable water bottle with you at all times,†Merkin added. “Set timers on your smartphone that remind you to drink water or another form of liquid. When you’re tallying up your water intake for the day, remember you can include tea, coffee, milk, sparkling water, and even juices and soda (although I wouldn’t recommend juice or soda, because of their high sugar content).â€
And remember that many healthy snack foods are hydrating too.
“You can eat your water,†Newgent said. “Desktop-friendly, water-rich foods include fresh berries, orange sections, cucumber slices, celery sticks, and grape tomatoes.â€
The worst thing you can do
Quenching your thirst with beer, wine, or spirits can actually make you more dehydrated. Avoid them when you’re worried, you’re in need of quick hydration.
