Our family got the news of my grandmother’s diagnosis from a biopsy December 2015: Stage four Lung Cancer. We were left reeling in a freefall of emotions. At 92 years young, the chemotherapy drug was worse than the diagnosis. We found ourselves amongst the land of “Palliative Care.â€
Arrangements were made, no hospice in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Closest is the next borough Etobicoke (part of Toronto.) Until October she was able to be cared for at home. That is no longer an option. The opportunity of one of 10 spots at the Dorothy Ley Hospice became available. (www.dlhospice.org )
A far cry from the fears of a hospital, it’s a spa-like, patient centered family atmosphere. Many actually thrive better there than they did either at home or in a hospital. Our fears were for nought, we found ourselves in an oasis the midst of a family health crisis. The many staff and volunteers treat clients and families with dignity and respect.
"Spiritual care lies at the heart of hospice. It says we are here. We will be with you in your living and your dying. We will free you from pain and give you the freedom to find your own meaning in your own life - your way. We will comfort you and those you love - not always with words, often with a touch or a glance. We will bring you hope - not for tomorrow but for this day. We will not leave you. We will watch with you. We will be there." Dr. Dorothy Ley
This is more than just a concert; it’s a way to keep this facility open. To keep this facility open costs 1.2 million dollars per year. Money well spent. Let’s help all families that are currently and will be receiving such care in future. Let’s also appreciate the legacies of those who’ve received care since 1990 when they began. Their noble Mission, Vision and Values are not just met but exceeded.

I wish to garner awareness and funds to help those in palliative care, and I know many of you reading this know of someone, are someone who’ve received or have family who have received care and deserve the best. Let’s make this happen.
