How to deal with homophobic people ?

Date Published: 9/24/2016

Hello there!

Are you a gay, lesbian or bisexual person who is often teased or discriminated against? What you’re dealing with can be described as homophobia which is a fear of gay people..It's important to learn how to cope with the homophobic reactions of others, as well as how to advocate and protect yourself.

Homophobia is a societal problem, and it can only be solved with information, self-awareness, and acceptance, don't take it personally.

This pain can be eased by having a few people who continuously show you love and support like parents or friends. The worse thing you can do when faced with homophobia is respond negatively. Cursing or becoming defensive may only confirm negative stereotypes.

By keeping your head, you are able to positively respond to the situation, and maybe even make the person feel guilty, or second-guess himself, for insulting you.

If you encounter someone who has particularly hateful opinions about same-sex partnerships or gay people, consider the possibility that she may be attracted to members of the same sex and is using homophobia to hide these feelings.

Remember to be strong and call the LGBT Community Trevor Project or even police if it's getting more than dangerous.
