HELP JOHN OTIENO OGWAYO FROM GITHURAI COMMUNITY KENYA GET HIS CART TO TRANSFER HOUSEHOLD WASTE AND TRASH TO THE MICRO RECYCLING CENTRE.

Date Published:

John Otieno is a vibrant environmental justice activist from Githurai community Kenya. John is a member of waste-free 23 which is a network of volunteer individuals and organizations worldwide with the common goal of eliminating the trucking, dumping and burning of household waste to combat impacts of climate change and create millions of jobs. WasteFree23 has provided expertise in resource mobilization and installation of new clean sustainable technologies to recycle ALL common trash in cooperation with organizations in Malawi, Kenya and Uganda. In less than 1 year, the WasteFree23 initiative has enabled 10,000 homes to become waste free, has created 100 jobs and is currently preventing 3 tones a day of household trash from being burned, trucked or dumped (www.wastefree.org).

Jonh is a volunteer with a passion for recycling and through waste-free 23 was able to acquire a micro recycling center which he is using to recycle trash collected from his community into sustainable products like recycled decorative bottles, shoes, bins e.t.c which are sold at a small profit and the proceeds from the sales are used to help the most vulnerable groups in his community like women, girls and the disabled.

John has been hiring a cart "Mkokoteni" to carry the waste to the recycling facility costing Ksh 500 roughly around $3.5 a day, almost Ksh 6000 "$ 41.3" a month. This is a lot of money for John and his community to spend on hiring a cart. A new cart costs Ksh 20,000 "$136.75". If John can get his cart it will minimize his transportation cost sustainably. This also means more profits will be made at the recycling center which provides a sustainable source of income to the marginalized community members while also combating the negative effects of climate change through recycling.
Your assistance will be highly appreciated by John and his community!!
