Empower and Employ

The Empower and Employ program by Mighty Minds Africa Development Initiative (MMA) aims to tackle critical issues in Southeastern Nigeria. Unemployment is a significant driver of poverty among the youth, with 53.40% of young people and 2.9 million graduates affected, according to the World Bank report. Moreover, 100 million Nigerian youths lack essential digital skills, crucial for 77% of global jobs by 2030, as highlighted by the World Economic Forum. The education system's focus on theory over practical skills leaves graduates deficient in communication, entrepreneurship, critical thinking, and IT skills.
The Empower and Employ program addresses this gap through tailored training in digital literacy, communication, problem-solving, and job-specific skills. Its goal is to equip individuals with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in the workforce and combat unemployment.
Southeastern Nigeria's mindset often limits opportunities, particularly in entrepreneurship. Many community members depend on white-collar jobs and overlook entrepreneurship as a viable option. However, the region's rich history of entrepreneurship can be harnessed to help individuals escape poverty and positively impact the economy. The Empower and Employ program promotes entrepreneurship, providing skills and resources to start and scale businesses.
Obstacles in job seeking, such as lack of self-confidence, motivation, or a history of rejection, are common. Statistics show that successful job applicants face six rejections for every ten applications. MMA's program offers mentorship, coaching, mock interview sessions, and personal development opportunities to help participants build confidence and improve their job search effectiveness.

Unyielding Poverty and Its Causes
Factors such as political interests, embezzlement of public funds, insufficient funding, and inconsistent government policies contribute to pervasive poverty in Enugu, which ranks 11th among Nigeria’s 20 poorest states. MMA's Empower and Employ Program aims to alleviate poverty by equipping youths with the right mindset and skills to thrive in the digital space, connecting them with remote jobs to improve their livelihoods.
