Accessing the Impacts of the Simonetta Lein Literacy Award 2019
One year after the Simonetta Lein Literacy Award in Nigeria, our literacy team paid an unscheduled visit to the winners of the literacy prize to interview them on the 2nd of October, 2020. The Team which was led by Taiwo Johnson, Programs Director of iRead To Live Initiative had the opportunity to engage with the students in their respective schools.
Paul Goboze, Winner of the Competition and Student of Sundest Progressive College, Osogbo said that: “It feels like yesterday when I was announced as the winner of the competiton. I felt so proud of myself and was so excited that I could own an iPad of my own. The iPad has been of immense benefit to me, I use it to read and also prepare for my examination. The textbooks were also very useful to me. I thank God and Simonetta for the investment in my academic pursuit.â€
Olaniyi Fiyin while responding to the questions said “I am very happy and grateful to the organisers of the competition. It seems like they saw that the pandemic was coming in 2020 because the iPad has been a major source of learning for me. I used the iPad to prepare for the just concluded West African Examination. It made my preparation easy and comfortable. I also want to thank my school for selecting me for the competitionâ€.
Agboola Pelumi, he said: “I was so shocked when my name was announced as the third position. I asked my teacher if it was my name that was announced. I am thankful to the organisers of the competition who gave me an iPad, textbooks and school bag. As a child from a poor background, the gifts were a big relief for my parents who are farmers who could not have been able to buy those gifts for me. May God bless Simonetta Lein and the WishWall Foundationâ€.
Taiwo Johnson thanked the principals of the schools for allowing their students to grant the interviews and urged the students to work harder so has to become successful in their academics.
