Future Entrepreneurs: Serendipity

Serendipity is not the product of patience; it’s the product of action.” ~Audrey Moralez

Aloha. This week serves as a preview and a trailer to something we definitely want to see on the big screen.

I am surrounded by a new reality to get myself back on track. It’s #NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing month, and I have committed to writing 50,000 words in 30 days. I am focusing on my thriller, refining some twists and adding backstory. I'll take a moment to reflect on two projects in the works.

I've written about my time living in the rainforest of Hawaii’s Big Island (Secrets to #ShineThroughtheNoise). I have not written about my time living in a castle…preceded by my deepest moment of uncertainly, hope...and serendipity.

I had a part-time marketing job for a wellness company on the Big Island and it included an ohana (apartment) with a breath-taking view of Maui. We had a 6-month contract, but things started to unravel after 3 months. Yes, there was Wi-Fi in the Rainforest, but cell service and the nearest town were 8 winding miles away. I emailed a vacation rental and entered a marketing contest. I hoped hard. I believed. And I won!

Then, one morning before sunrise, I knew I had to leave. I was promised a free week as winner of the contest at Castle in Hawaii. I was the proverbial picture of gratitude when I accepted and packed up the car to move from the northern tip of the island to the southeastern corner. I had my Hawaii tan, Zumba tone and a grand leap of faith as I started my next chapter at #CastleInHawaii. It was February and I was not ready to immerse myself in Midwestern winter; I was also not ready to testify about what I saw in the rainforest: that will unfold in another story. The fresh perspective from the queen suite at the castle let me exhale and think.

Sheri Smith, the Castle owner/chef had met with me. We talked over marketing ideas and ways to make the most of the community business, and ceremonies by the sea. I was an event planner getting ready to retire from soirees and go back to writing. Now, Sheri and I both have stories to tell.

Meet my friend Sheri, an outstanding chef and brilliant storyteller from a Broadway background. I got to know Sheri and her dog Ray during many walks through the community and time on the Pacific. I believe that the Big Island demands authenticity, and gets to the core of what we’re truly about. I could no longer hide behind my brisk city pace, busy schedule or spending a client’s money for the next sailing soiree. Therefore, we were real. Our stories entwine because I left the rainforest that day and put my hope in the castle prize. I ended up living in the castle suite for 3 months! I left the castle and drove to Kona side on the day that closed with a 36-hour tsunami survival saga. Alas, we will continue this tale in book and film form. I believe it was all worth it.

My wish for you this week, dear reader, is authenticity and action…and the serendipity that comes with it when we are on the right path.

Now, meet my friend Sheri, and please listen to her wish as well:

“I have two passions. Event planning and event production feeds my wallet, writing feeds my soul. One is dust, one is not.

A wish? I never wish, I do manifest. No expectations…No regrets. I am an intensely private person. So this will be very difficult and uncomfortable to post here. Just following orders of my inspiring angel (Akasha Lin).

I’ve never asked anyone for anything. Ok, here goes.

So, if I had a wish it would be to find that producer who sees the value in this film project. The director, the talented actors and producers (are you listening Sally Field? Reese Witherspoon? Stockard Channing? Lily Tomlin?) PEOPLE MAKE PLANS is an award winner in one screenplay contest, a finalist in another and got decent coverage in a third, all posted on the site: www.PeopleMakePlans.com. It can be produced with a reasonable budget and can easily be made for TV and/or film festivals. There are a ton of marketing opportunities that can be associated with it. Look Book is available upon request. And Akasha Lin is already writing the book version as well.

The “practical” wish comes up too: Finding the catering clients in SoCal with a realistic budget to design their special event, be it picnic or holiday. After doing this, my passion, for over 25 years I am at the pinnacle of my career of event planning and production with all the resources to do so. And if I (have to) say so myself, I’m DAMN good at it!

For your consideration, Mahalo, I remain gratefully, Sheri Smith”

Cheers to Sheri’s entrepreneurial spirit and to yours for reading. I believe in these stories. I have a feeling that we’ll have more good news to share soon.

Best wishes to fellow #NaNoWriMos.

In serendipity,
