I WISH SCHOOLS BECOME WORLD FEEDING BASKETS FOR THEIR STUDENTS TEACHERS AND COMMUNITY IN AFRICA

The impacts on children's health and educational outcomes depend on the feeding food systems available in schools as you can realize that our children spend more life time in schools than at home The new pedagogy or curriculum aims at providing to the learners 21st Century skills which include; critical thinking, creativity, collaboration or teamwork, communication, information literacy, and flexibility. All this require a good feeding system so that these students are able to carry on all the tasks as they use a lot of energy, brain power and practical’s in their learning as compared to the old curriculum that emphasized hearing writing and reading only. Schools are struggling with feeding of thousands of students and annually schools spend millions of shillings to feed students because all food is sourced from service providers. The Government of Uganda has in the past years struggled to implement the school feeding Policy in the Primary schools with no positive results to date. Uganda’s concept is informed with many analysis of the articles published without and within the country revealing a lot about the consistent positive effects of school feeding in its different modalities on energy intake, micronutrient status, school enrolment, and school attendance of the children participating in SFP compared to non-participants in the SFP. The whole essence according to H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the President of the Republic of Uganda is that this SFP is intended to alleviate short-term hunger, improve nutrition and cognition of children while in school. The nutritional benefits of school timely and nutritious breakfast and lunch has immense impacts to students learning including positive effects on arithmetic tests, reading, writing, and spelling abilities for a student. And in private schools, its advantages are imaginable from reducing the dropout rates to increasing enrolments in schools. Schools usually have large and others small plots of land which could be farmed to produce food enough for school feeding and selling the surplus to meet school needs but further determine staff salaries increments from the sales of surplus food. The schools “lack agricultural inputs like seeds, manure, and fertilizer ignorantly”. The schools have all the key factors for food production in Uganda like Land, rain water harvested using the large long roofs, Human Urine collected from the many numbers of students that has a 100% composition of all plant nutrient’s like Nitrogen, Potassium and phosphorus. All this three provide a food system that can be developed sustainably in that a school can do crop production and animal production with a maximum constant horticulture of organic fruits and vegetables throughout the year that promote nutrition and incomes for the schools while fostering its dependable factors like creation of jobs for agricultural professionals to work in farms and marketing services for the school. This out puts and improvement of incomes will automatically impact and translate to the surrounding communities as a result of adoption and availability of food that is cheap and nutritious from the school. Remember hunger is an ongoing problem that affects more than1.2 billion people and the largest number is children who do not have enough to eat in the world today. Most of the individuals affected are in the most impoverished regions of the world. Previous efforts by heads of states, international organizations, and local agencies agreed to address poverty and hunger-related issues which resulted in the UN Millennium Declaration (2000) and recently the 17 Sustainable Development Goals yet to be achieved by 2030 that is drawing nearer than anticipated without any key visual positive impacts especially in addressing goal 1 and Goal 4. The government rolled out the new lower secondary education curriculum in February 2020 with the aim of creating meeting the learners’ needs especially in regard to skills training and enhancement. The Minister for Education, Hon. Janet Museveni, in her statement to Parliament, said that the need to review the curriculum was overdue since it had not been revisited since the colonial education system was introduced. The Minister revealed that the old curriculum was channelling out graduates with no practical skills to meet the demands in the labour market. The in-school farm and food production are a real practical skills avenue for both teachers and students to improve their nutrition and school food
systems, end hunger and earn a living without any worry on climate change and its negative effects on food production since the school Agricultural farm will be hinged on Climate Smart Agricultural Practices.
