Health Fairy!
Date Published: 8/24/2017
As a child in the 1970’s my mother used to take me to the health food store. It smelled like cardboard and carob! I vowed when I grew up I would eat Captain Crunch and cookies for dinner instead of the healthy meals my mother made. I spent all of my allowance on candy and thin mint girl scout cookies and I used to raid my best friend Cindy’s kitchen looking for more.
My bad eating habits continued into the first couple of years of high school. I was super super skinny so I never gained weight from all of the junk I ate but I didn’t feel great. When I was 17, I started swimming for exercise and I realized I had a knack for it. I began to take my mom’s advice and start fueling my body right. Wow, what I difference!!
Around the time I was finally getting healthy, my mother’s health, despite her healthy habits was deteriorating. She had some unknown auto immune illnesses that covered her in rashes and left her emaciated. It was heartbreaking. She always said one’s health was the most important thing.
She continued to be ill for years without any answers and then in her mid 50’s she got ovarian cancer. She died a few months after turning 57.
My determination to not only continue living a healthy lifestyle increased but so did my desire to help others. I decided to get my Master’s in Public Health focusing on health education and health communications. During the program I made a television PSA on skin cancer awareness and the production company said I was a natural and that I should keep pursuing health media. When I graduated I volunteered at a community TV station for a year and from there I took my VHS tapes with the plastic plants and cheap curtains to a local station, KRUZ and pitched a health television show that I would host and produce. I checked in with the station manager regularly for six months until he finally said let’s do one episode and if I like it, we can do 13. So, I did it, he loved it and I did it for two seasons. The show was called Health Power.
At that time I made a huge cross country move from the west to the east coast. TV jobs were very hard to come by so I worked as a health educator in a variety of settings from a sex educator to a hepatitis C educator. I also started my own business as a health and lifestyle coach. I would go into people’s homes, clean out the junk from their kitchens, take them grocery shopping and teach them how to prepare healthy meals.
Then in 2009, I got the opportunity to have my own radio show on WUML 91.5 FM in greater Boston. At first I was ambivalent, since I really wanted to do another health television program, but luckily I said yes and the rest is history! I created the show It’s Your Health for WUML 91.5 FM and eventually got my show on 2 NPR stations and 4 commercial stations where the show is still being aired! I’ve interviewed dozens of internationally renowned doctors, dietitians, athletes, and celebrities,I know how to bring out the enthusiasm and unpack the latest advances in health from the world’s leading experts.
I branched out into other radio shows. Today, I am the co-host and producer of Naturally Savvy Radio and the host and producer of Talk Healthy Today a show created by AIM MEDIA (Clean Eating Magazine, Vegetarian Times, Better Nutrition, and more!) Both shows are on RadioMD and can also be heard on iHeart Radio Talk, TuneIn, Stitcher, iTunes, UberRadio, and TalkStreamLive. This lead to me being a regular on Carol Alt’s national health TV show A Healthy You on The FOX NEWS CHANNEL as well as creating, hosting, and producing 30 minute health television shows, It’s Your Health TV on WZMY-TV.
Oh yeah, I am also the co-editor of an non-fiction anthology from DRT Press (published on October 10th) Easy to Love, But Hard to Live With: Real People, Invisible Disabilities, True Stories, a look into the lives of families and individuals dealing with invisible disabilities including autism, mental illness, OCD, ADHD, and more.
My Goal:
I am currently working on a book on sexual health and healthy living that is coming out in Spring 2018 through Skyhorse Publishing. The book includes 50 recipes to enhance your sexual health! The recipes were created special for the book by Erin MacDonald RD, the registered dietitian for Clean Eating Magazine. The book also covers the emotional side of improving your sex life.
Through my radio shows and website, my guests and I share our knowledge and experience, so that you can live the healthiest life imaginable!
So, whether you are already living a healthy life or just starting to, don’t worry. You have a new friend that wants to help you – me! Let me make your health wishes come true!
