End the Hostile Worldwide Nuclear Family Practice Against Disabled People
Date Published:
Throughout generations, disabled people around the world are either subjected to guardianship or denial of autonomy by their biological families. We live in a world that enforces norms on obeying nuclear authority figures and myths regarding each person being provided with only one family. We are told by society that our feelings and urge for independence is not valid until we achieve complete financial independence and can afford to fully estrange ourselves from nuclear family structures.
It creates societal unfairness when disabled people have to deal with seeing non-disabled people having more autonomy than them. It causes jealousy when disabled people from supportive biological families get favored in society, compared to disabled people from hostile biological families systemically minimizing their autonomy. The system is unfair when it allows hostile biological families to seek guardianship or withhold autonomy from disabled people trying to escape hostility for their lifelong independence. The system causes disabled people to suffer when they have to undergo an overwhelmingly bureaucratic court and socioeconomic process in order to retrieve their own autonomy.
BIPOC disabled people are much more likely to endure societal invalidation. Society leaning towards White Supremacy and Christian Nationalism form societies which portray White individuals and Eurocentric ideologies as the norm by default. This leaves BIPOC disabled people of socioeconomic minorities or from culturally conservative families misunderstood and held to double standards in life.
LGBTQ+ disabled people tend to experience guardianship and denial of autonomy much worse. LGBTQ+ disabled people face barriers in finding true friendships, love, or respect for their own gender when hostile biological parents prevent them from being themselves. Systems often default to nuclear parents acting on the so-called "person's best interests" in decision making, including which names to use, which genders to use, whether to marry, and whether to freely love.
Such systemic failure leads to the majority of disabled people having a background of experiencing family estrangement. This leads them to being misunderstood, stigmatized, and lacking societal accommodations in a society which defaults to the assumption of a nuclear family structure.
Lets work together to rewrite the norms, fight against these ableist and nuclear family structural norms, and abolish the guardianship system. Lets advocate to ensure that disabled people have the power to seek their own autonomy at any age, especially when they wish to be free from hostile biological families. Lets make spiritual systems validate disabled people's boundaries permanently locking out biological families and inviting chosen families to their lives. Lets fight against teachings which promote the myth on each person being provided with only one family, since people are capable to cut off toxic families and build supportive families.
