Growing up from the rural areas of North Eastern Uganda in Sororti Arapai Otucho Village. Being the 4th from the family of 8 children, My parents had no money to take us to school due to poverty as if that was not enough, my father was a true definition of alcoholism who always abandoned us from the village with our mother straggling to make things meet. Working so hard to see that we go through with education, I used to escort my mother to dig in someone's farm so we could raise money for books and scholastic materials before going to school early morning, this touched my mothers boss and one day he offered to take over to pay my school fees till I completed my University. All thanks to him.
Now being one and the only girl who went through school and became the only university graduate from my family and the entire clan is yet another challenge to me .
I have always wished for an opportunity to express my need of coming up with at least a skilling centre to help my other sisters gain soft skills like tailoring, weaving, making reusable sanitary pads which is the most challenge to many girls who drop out of school due to poverty and the inability to afford disposable pads due to poverty. training them to make reusable pads will not only keep the young girls in school but it will eliminate bad vices like early pregnancy due to being lured by men in exchange of money for buying pads.
proving the women with different soft skills will help them create jobs and improve on the livelihood of their families since they will be able to generate income from skills gained and thus achieving a wish of educating a girlchild and educating the nation.
Due to the effects of political instability which left many families in Soroti poor due to living in camps, COVID -19 made it worse by causing higher rates of poverty, unemployment and higher rates of inflation affecting many young women causing financial inequality in addition to lack of enough food due to poor weather which affects their yields .
Therefore I strongly wish to open a training centre in my community to offer training to at least 100 girls in different skills every year to help them gain basic skills and create self employment so that they can earn income to better their lives.
