Happy Black History Month!

Date Published: 1/31/2018

Tomorrow is the start of Black History Month so I’d like to celebrate by talking about one of my favorite time periods: the Harlem Renaissance. It was a time of literature, art and music all protesting the idea of racism and racial stereotypes. Whether it was Marcus Garvey, Langston Hughes, or W.E.B Du Bois, they all showed the complexities of a humans who happened to be Black in America. These voices and many more showed that Black people experience the same trials, but expressed their views in very different ways.

My wish is that everyone picks one Harlem Renaissance author and reads some of their work this month. You may be surprised to see that what they wrote about 100 years ago is still relevant today.

Peace and Love,
