We’re Thankful for Indigenous People

Date Published: 11/22/2017

For this post we will be celebrating Native American Heritage Month. Since Thanksgiving is tomorrow, we decided this would be a great time to remember that we still depict Indigenous people in a less than flattering manner. But, in the state of California, we have started taking small steps to heal the damage that has been done thus far.

The San Diego State University mascot was the Aztecs, but they recently changed it. Earlier this month the school’s senate voted to remove the school mascot and any other images that depict Indigenous people in a less than flattering way. This came after SDSU’s Associated Student Counsel rejected a similar resolution earlier this year.

On Halloween I wished that we didn’t wear culturally-insensitive costumes. That wish was somewhat granted via SDSU. This Division 1 University put their history aside and decided to appreciate another culture instead of appropriate it.
