#TAKEAKNEE Takes Over Social Media

Date Published: 9/27/2017

We had a wild weekend for football and I'm not talking about close games, touchdowns, or hard hits. It was rather wild because we saw #takeaknee and #imwithkap go viral on Sunday.

One year ago former San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem, which sparked controversy throughout the media. The reason for his kneeling was to shine a light on the injustice people of color face because of police brutality. One year later it has become the biggest topic of the week thanks to Donald Trump. We saw over 200 players kneel over the weekend, that's a huge leap from the 30 or so players from the week before.

My wish is for everyone to think about what the national anthem means to them. Ask yourself, why we stand? What do the lyrics say? What does the flag represent? I believe that by asking these questions to ourselves and others that it will start spark productive conversations.
