#IAmNotACostume

Date Published: 11/01/2017

Halloween was last night. I hope everyone had a fun, but more importantly a safe time.

Having said that it’s 2017 and I’m still writing about culturally inappropriate costumes. It’s not cool or funny when I see you walking around the bar in a sombrero and a poncho. I’ve also seen people wear war paint and feathers to imitate the Indigenous culture. It’s not “elegant” or “super cute” to put someone’s culture down. As conscious citizens we have to speak up and speak out.

That’s my wish for this week. If you see photos of people dressed up insensitively on social media please direct message them and start a conversation about cultural appropriation. Knowledge is power!

If you want to learn more about the effects of wearing someone’s culture as a costume, please check out Urban Native Era’s latest project on YouTube.com.
